The Woodlands Township Board of Directors candidate recommendations

On November 3, residents of The Woodlands will have the opportunity to elect three great candidates to the Township Board of Directors. These candidates have a firm commitment to our values of constitutionally limited government, fiscal responsibility, and free markets, and have proven track records of standing up against special interests and the political establishment on behalf of the residents and the community. This is a pivotal election for The Woodlands; if all three of these candidates are elected, the Board will finally consist of a majority of resident advocates.  We hope you'll join us in supporting these candidates.

Setting for the November 2015 Woodlands Township races

The Woodlands was originally intended to be a quiet, secure enclave where residents could raise their families in a true “hometown” setting. Two main factors continue to threaten this quality of life that we enjoy, and for which residents’ paid a premium to make their home – namely, commercial development and road expansion. The problems these two factors present are exacerbated by The Hughes Corporation, who now owns The Woodlands Development Company, and Montgomery County. It is therefore imperative that residents elect candidates to the Township board who will stand up for the interests of the residents and be willing to fight the development company and the county.

JOHN P. MCMULLAN

First elected in 2013, John McMullan has quickly proven himself to be a fighter for the interests of The Woodlands residents, and is unafraid to stand against the majority of the board on issues that affect residents’ quality of life. He was the first elected official in all of Montgomery County to come out in opposition of the 2015 road bond and The Woodlands Parkway extension, and was one of the leaders in the movement that helped to defeat that project. He has also established himself as a leader in fiscal responsibility on the board. Mr. McMullan is one of only three members of the board who has attended every budget meeting over the last two years. During these budget meetings, where the tax rate and spending priorities are set for the next fiscal year, Mr. McMullan pushed for tax cuts that eventually resulted in a 22% reduced tax rate. (From 29.4 cents to 23 cents) In the last budget meeting, along with directors Gordy Bunch and Peggy Hausman, John successfully defeated reckless spending on controversial budget items which had previously barely made it into the budget by a vote of 4 – 3.

ANN SNYDER

Ann Snyder is the President and CEO of Interfaith of The Woodlands and Interfaith Community Clinic. Prior to this she was a professor at the University of Houston College of Education. Mrs. Snyder has been very active in the community, having previously served on the Conroe ISD school board for fifteen years as chairman. During her time on the school board, Mrs. Snyder was known as a decisive leader, who was instrumental in hiring Dr. Don Stockton as Superintendent. Her service on the school board was rewarded in 2013 after the school district decided to name a new school – the Ann K. Snyder Elementary School – in her honor. She has also been involved in The Woodlands Area Chamber of Commerce, The Woodlands Area Republican Women, and The Woodlands Rotary Club.

LAURA FILLAULT

Laura Fillault (“fee-yo”) is a community activist dedicated to the preservation of The Woodlands as a safe, quiet enclave where residents can live, work, and play in the “hometown” they invested in upon moving to the community. Recently, she garnered acclaim as one of the leading opponents of the May 2015 Montgomery County road bond and The Woodlands Parkway extension project. Laura worked tirelessly to advocate on behalf of The Woodlands’ residents, organizing opposition and regularly attending the Montgomery County Commissioners Court to speak out against the extension project. Her efforts are largely to thank for The Woodlands’ rejection of the road bond by 83% at the polls, which contributed to the county-wide defeat of the bond and stopped the extension from being built. (For now.) We have no doubt that Mrs. Fillault will bring this spirited advocacy to a Township board that too often sides with the county and The Woodlands Development Company over the interests of the residents.
